Basquiat x Banksy: The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. is preparing to exhibit a collection of works by two legendary street artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy. The exhibition will feature Basquiat’s painting “Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump” from 1982, which was purchased by hedge fund manager Ken Griffin for over $100 million USD (according to Artnet records).
The painting will be displayed alongside Banksy’s Banksquiat: Boy and Dog in Stop and Search (2018), which reinterprets Basquiat’s work by adding police officers searching Basquiat’s character using stencil technique. Banksy first created this piece outside the Barbican Centre in London to highlight the contradiction of exhibiting graffiti artists in museums that typically remove graffiti.

Both artists have a history of creating works in public spaces. Basquiat began his street art career as part of the duo SAMO (with fellow artist Al Diaz), while Banksy’s guerrilla art has gained worldwide attention. Basquiat’s paintings have sold for record-breaking prices, with one piece fetching around over $110.5 million USD, and Banksy’s “Love Is in the Bin” selling for approximately $25.4 million USD
The exhibition will also include 20 small works by Basquiat and a screening of the semi-autobiographical film ‘Downtown 81’ starring the artist himself. The Basquiat × Banksy exhibition will run from September 29, 2024, to October 26, 2025, lasting a full year.
