At the first art exhibition of Otaku curated by Mr. Murakami’s outstanding student in China
In 2019, after collaborating with the famous singer Pharrell Williams, he became the curator of an exhibition in France. Recently, Mr. Otaku, who calls himself an artist, held an exhibition titled “Quotidianist” at the How Art Museum in Shanghai, China, allowing the audience to enter the cultural world of Otaku and enjoy various forms of artworks together.
This gentleman is considered an outstanding student of the legendary artist Takashi Murakami, and Murakami’s art institution Kaikai Kiki still takes care of his works. Therefore, when we appreciate the gentleman’s artworks, we can sense the intertwining and fusion of various elements, especially the vibrant and colorful cartoon characters, which are representative works of Murakami’s “Superflat” art style announced in 2001.
In this exhibition, various diverse artworks are showcased, including paintings, sculptures, installation art, and video art. All these works intertwine and blend with each other in the space, such as sliding paper doors filled with colorful square boxes in a carpeted room, as well as large cartoon avatars and common Japanese vending machines (usually featuring cat images) in front of shops… it’s fantastic! All of this is the result of the gentleman’s years of effort, as he attempts to bring the images and stories he sees in his cultural microcosm into mainstream culture and showcase them to ordinary people (not just otaku).
As for whether Pharrell himself is an otaku, I’m not sure, but he does collect many works by the gentleman.
The “Quotidianist” exhibition will be held at the How Art Museum in Shanghai, China, from to November 21, 2021.
