Southeast Asian Art Market

Southeast Asian Art Market is heating up as ART SG reveals its 2025 gallery lineup, featuring 106 galleries—a drop from last year’s 114 and a significant decrease from its debut count of 164 in 2023. This tightening roster highlights ART SG’s ongoing challenges as it squares off with its powerhouse competitor, Art Basel Hong Kong.

Just hours after ART SG’s announcement, Art Basel Hong Kong dropped its own impressive 2025 lineup: 242 galleries, only a slight dip from last year’s 243. With a gallery count now over double that of ART SG, Art Basel reinforces its dominance in the region.

The competition between the two fairs underscores the complexities of the Southeast Asian art scene. While initially ART SG aims to position itself as “The Southeast Asia Largest Ever Art Fair” (ART SG ‘s tagline in inaugural edition in 2023), the difficulty in retaining previous exhibitors presents a significant challenge to the fair growth. Art Basel, meanwhile, capitalizes on its established network, drawing collectors and galleries from across Asia and the globe.

ART SG’s diminishing gallery count marks the second consecutive year of declines, posing a crucial moment for the fair. ART SG is striving to find new galleries  and also joining force with the notable Singapore Art Week. However, retaining prestigious galleries is crucial for ART SG to maintain its competitive position in both international and regional art markets—a strategic challenge that demands immediate attention.
