Seoul: Asia’s New Art Capital?
For the past 4–5 years, there has been growing discussion about Seoul becoming Asia’s new art capital. Today, I can confidently say that Seoul, South Korea, has secured its spot on the global art map!
Frieze Seoul: Igniting Seoul’s Art Scene?
Seoul’s vision of becoming a global art center is closer than ever. The phrase “Seoul Rising” in the art world is becoming more meaningful, and the debut of Frieze Seoul marks a significant moment.
From September 2-5, 2022, Frieze launched its first Seoul edition at COEX in Gangnam, in conjunction with Kiaf. Feedback showed that the event wasn’t just a success for Frieze but also a milestone for Seoul. This event has shaken Hong Kong’s throne as the region’s dominant art trading hub.
However, it’s not Frieze alone that has elevated Seoul. For years, South Korea’s government has invested in building its art ecosystem. Frieze Seoul acted as a catalyst, showcasing the foundation already in place. While reports differ on sales figures, it’s clear Frieze Seoul’s first edition has carved a new niche, even if it’s not yet rivaling Art Basel Hong Kong.
Hong Kong’s Shaken Throne
Rumors have swirled about Art Basel planning its first Tokyo edition to tap into the East Asian market. While this hasn’t materialized, new whispers suggest on the new possibility of “Art Basel Seoul.”
Timing is crucial. Hong Kong, the region’s current art trading hub, faces political issues and censorship concerns from China, affecting global galleries operating there. This situation creates demand for a new “art center,” with Seoul emerging as a strong contender.
Seoul’s Secret Weapons and Future Prospects
As the art world intersects with blockchain and Web 3.0 technologies, Seoul is ready to lead with its technological capabilities. Its soft power, fueled by K-pop (Hallyu), also boosts its art promotion, exemplified by Lee Jung-jae’s (Squid Game’s lead actor) participation in Frieze Seoul as an art collector.
Despite historical challenges, South Korea’s vision and strategic use of soft power have firmly placed Seoul on the global art map. Seoul’s untapped potential hints at a bright future where it may not only lead Asia but position itself as a global art capital.
The question remains: Will Seoul truly become the world’s “art capital”? Only time will tell.
