Tilda Swinton to Perform House of Gestures at Guggenheim Bilbao

Tilda Swinton is set to appear in House of Gestures, a live performance at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain on June 5 and 6, 2026. The project is presented as a special collaboration between the museum and Dom Pérignon, the historic French champagne house.

The performance is conceived by Olivier Saillard, a curator and performer whose work moves across fashion, live performance and the history of dress. House of Gestures draws inspiration from both Dom Pérignon and the distinctive architecture of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

What makes the project particularly striking is the speed with which public interest gathered around it. Free tickets became available through the museum’s website on May 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., and the performance is now listed as sold out. The response reflects Swinton’s rare position as an actor and artist able to move fluidly between cinema, fashion and performance art.

When Body, Clothing and Gesture Become Language

House of Gestures is not structured as a conventional theatrical work driven by dialogue. Instead, it places gesture, presence and bodily transformation at the centre of its language. Swinton’s movement becomes a kind of writing across space, creating meaning without the need for direct explanation.

In this performance, clothing is not treated simply as costume. It becomes part of the narrative structure itself. Swinton changes garments in front of the audience, allowing fabric, form and movement to gradually reveal characters, situations and stories that may be real, imagined or suspended somewhere between the two.

Through this process, the empty space of the stage is slowly transformed into a “place” charged with memory, emotion and meaning. The audience does not merely watch a body in motion. It is invited to travel through time, space and feeling, shaped entirely through action.

A Dialogue Between Performance Art and Iconic Architecture

The decision to stage House of Gestures in the Atrium of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao gives the work a dimension beyond that of a standard museum performance. Designed by Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim Bilbao is one of the most recognisable museum buildings in the world, and its architecture has long carried the status of an artwork in its own right.
