Art-Thai-Time

BACC 939 Rana 1 Rd., Wangmai, Pathumwan, Bangkok, Thailand

Commemorating 100 years since the arrival in Siam in 1923 of Corrado Feroci, an Italian sculptor who played a prominent role in the development of Thai modern art and who later came to be known as Father of Modern Art in Thailand, an exhibition will be held to reflect on his cultural legacy left behind for his adopted country. Apart from his state-commissioned sculptural works on important monuments throughout Bangkok, his cultural policy vision has also been far-reaching, resulting in the various and important initiation of cultural institutions that have played their part in the ensuing decades to keep his dreams alive. Among these are the Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art, Thailand’s first public art gallery, and the School of Fine Arts which later became the Silpakorn University. The Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art (BIMA) came into being in 1974, after years of campaigning by art patrons and artists who were determined to see his vision realized after Feroci’s demise in 1962. BIMA was named in memory of Feroci, using his Thai name, Silpa Bhirasri. The Institute operated until 1988, during which time it hosted numerous ground-breaking exhibitions, as well as music, theatre and film programmes. It became known for…

Ad Minoliti’s Geometries of the Forest in Seoul

Peres Projects Seoul 37 Yulgok-ro 1-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul,, Korea, Democratic People's Republic of

Argentinian artist Ad Minoliti is set to stage her abstract geometric paintings in her first solo show in Korea, titled 'Geometries of the Forest,' at Peres Projects Seoul. The exhibition, opening on June 22, will feature Minoliti's signature bright-colored works, exploring themes related to the circulatory system of forests. In creating this exhibition, Minoliti sought to illustrate the relational aspects of the natural world, drawing sartorial inspiration from the writings of philosopher Donna Haraway. Haraway advocates for a revision of traditional notions of identity to account for the inherent interdependence of all living and non-living forms. Minoliti's works are organized like ecological systems, allowing each organic shape on her canvases to play its part in a larger environmental structure. For instance, in 'MAGIC Dust,' a caterpillar appears atop a mushroom cap and a yellow reptilian tongue, while a blue mushroom forms the body of the insect. 'Geometries of the Forest' will mark the first installment in a new concept that Minoliti will further explore with a "major institution" in Germany this fall. Although details are currently sparse, the artist's forthcoming next installment will transform an underground gallery space into a fungal cavern. The 'Geometries of the Forest' exhibition will open…
