The 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (Venice Biennale) has officially announced 111 artists for what is widely regarded as one of the world’s most consequential exhibitions, under the theme “In Minor Keys”, first conceived by Koyo Kouoh, the Biennale’s appointed curator, who passed away suddenly in May 2025.

The newly released list makes one thing immediately visible: artists connected to the United States appear in notably high numbers, from collectives such as arms ache avid aeon to figures including Laurie Anderson and Tammy Nguyen, among many others. The list also names Marcel Duchamp, widely regarded as a foundational figure of Dada.
“In Minor Keys”: the curatorial theme
“In Minor Keys” is built around the search for “resonant relationships” among artists across the world. It is not framed as a simple gathering of works, but as an attempt to imagine how creative energies might “converge”, even when artists have never met or belonged to the same circles.
Koyo Kouoh, the Cameroonian Swiss curator who died in May 2025 before the Biennale opened, left behind a conceptual framework that her team has continued to carry forward, staying close to the spirit she set in motion while remaining open to the unforeseen, inside a generous and meaning-rich horizon.
Rather than dividing the exhibition into conventional sections, the presentation is designed to move along several conceptual “undercurrents”, from the idea of “Shrines” and oases of shelter for body and mind, to forms of wonder that persist in the face of cynicism, and onward to the building of institutions that channel energy toward social purpose, what Kouoh called “schools”.
Kouoh’s curatorial imagination also drew deeply from literature, particularly two works: Beloved by Toni Morrison and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, both of which bind the real to memory, and allow life and time to fold into one another in unsettling, luminous ways.
